Camaraderie

The Canadian government frequently employed internees on large-scale labour projects. This included the development of Banff National Park as well as numerous mining and logging operations. With much of their wealth confiscated, some internees were paid twenty-five cents a day, far less than that offered to labourers of the time, and in some circumstances, men had fifty cents a day deducted for room and board. The conditions were brutal, and the work crippling. Toiling from dark to dark with armed guards patrolling, some internees were forced to run while carrying logs on their shoulders. At the end of their long working days, the camaraderie formed between these men would be the only encouragement for them to continue on.
